MACC: Former Finance Minister Under Investigation, Hiding Billions In Ringgit

A former Minister of Finance and several other prominent individuals are among those investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding the disclosure of the ‘Pandora Papers’ which revealed the storage of extraordinary wealth abroad.

The minister is understood to have been interviewed at MACC Headquarters, Putrajaya.

Reported sources said that the current investigation is aimed at the extraordinary wealth owned by some individuals and links with offshore companies abroad.

MACC also investigates whether there is a financial link that is owned as a result of government tenders and projects.

So far as well, it is understood that no assets have been frozen by MACC.

In fact, many other individuals including former ministers and their families are linked to the ‘Pandora Papers’ allegations.

Meanwhile, BH’s efforts to contact the Chief Commissioner of MACC, Tan Sri Azam Baki at this time have not been successful.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was Leader of the Opposition once proposed to debate the disclosure of the Pandora Papers.

In the 2021 Parliament session, he was angry and even accused the then Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat of deliberately rejecting the motion, and even claimed that Datuk Azhar Azizan acted as a ‘lawyer’ for the political leaders and businessmen linked in the report.

The ‘Pandora Papers’ revelation needs to be presented and debated immediately because there are allegations stating the amount of money from Malaysia kept abroad, reaching hundreds of billions.

He said, it should be debated immediately because it not only involves the Pandora Papers, but also the Global Financial Integrity 2012 report and the Panama Papers disclosure in 2015.

The Pandora Paper’s disclosure mentions that approximately 12 Malaysian individuals including four politicians are among dozens of heads of state, governments and rulers from around the world who were found to be using offshore tax havens to hide assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars, over the past 25 years.
