Awesome TV News: MCMC Opens Investigation Papers

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) opened investigation papers under Section 206 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (AKM) 1998 to investigate a report published by the television station, Awesome TV.

MCMC’s Corporate Communications Department said the investigation was related to the failure to comply with license conditions and it held a meeting with the top management of the television station yesterday to seek further clarification regarding the report on the proposal to reduce the number of civil servants.

“When the investigation papers are completed, they will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further decisions,” it said in a statement today.

According to MCMC, if convicted, the offender can be punished as provided under Section 242 which is a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or both.

It said, MCMC takes user complaints seriously and is committed to improving the level of compliance of individual content application service providers (CASP-I) licensees.

“It is so that the content broadcast reflects the culture, identity and norms of society in accordance with the 1998 AKM and the Content Code,” it explained.

It said that every complaint received will be examined based on the provisions of the 1998 AKM, related regulations under it and in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set.

It explained further, among the procedure or process of making a complaint is like calling the broadcaster complained of to come forward and provide an explanation to determine the form of enforcement action to be taken.
