British Council, Connecting The UK And Malaysia For 75 Years

This year marks 75 years of the British Council in Malaysia and since opening its doors here in 1948, the British Council has continued to create opportunities for the UK and Malaysia through education, research, language teaching, science, enterprise, and the arts. It connects and empowers people from across the country to innovate for themselves, their institutions, their communities, and the world.

The British Council kicked off its jubilee celebration on 24 February with a dinner reception for over 100 partners from across the public and private sectors in Malaysia, and UK alumni and leaders in the fields of education, the arts, and sciences. As part of the anniversary festivities, the British Council also hosted a high-profile UK Alumni Symposium and Careers Fair, at the M Hotel and Resort in Kuala Lumpur.

British Council CEO, Scott McDonald, is making his inaugural visit to Malaysia in his role as part of the anniversary and is justifiably very proud of the organisation’s long success in the country. He said: “It is humbling to see how even after 75 years British Council Malaysia continues to enable our two countries to connect, to draw expertise and inspiration from each other and to provide collaborative opportunities in the arts, education, and sciences. Every day, the British Council and its trusted partners, including government, institutions and practitioners in Malaysia and in the UK, are together creating better and more exciting futures for us all.”

Commenting further on the impact of mutual international collaboration, Scott added, “The recent pandemic has greatly strengthened the case for international partnership and collaboration. British Council Malaysia’s efforts to bring regional and global experts, practitioners and policymakers together digitally illustrates the insight and adaptability of our team and sets the bar for international cultural and educational diplomacy for the next 75 years.”
