NRECC Collaborates With TNB To Spur On Energy-Sensitive Society

The Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) is working hand in hand with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and related agencies to develop energy-sensitive society in order to contribute to the sustainability of the country’s energy industry.

NRECC minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad launched the Malaysia Energy Literacy Program initiative (MELP) at Dewan Baiduri, Wisma Sumber Asli on 1 March 2023 which aims to foster Malaysians about the importance of energy and their role in energy management for future sustainability.

“NRECC welcomes this initiative to join hands with TNB, making MELP as a national initiative with a specific agenda to increase people’s sensitivity and making them more knowledgeable about the energy industry.

“When we can increase knowledge, we are able to respond using energy more efficiently, contributing to energy sustainability, protecting the environment better and moving towards a more sustainable future especially for the next generation,” he said addressing the employees of the ministry and agencies agency at the launch event today.

In conjunction with the launch of MELP, TNB exhibited a Gallery Walk themed “Together with the Nation through Energy Transition” which covers the entire energy ecosystem chain with a display of energy transition and direction of sustainability, energy efficiency and energy renewables (TBB) alongside the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

The concept of MELP began to be developed by TNB since 2020 through various energy wise campaigns among the people, including the young generation at school and educational institutions high as well as the consumer community through the cooperation of the Malaysian Muslim Consumer Association (PPIM) and the Malaysian Consumer Association (FOMCA).

Now MELP is supported together with NRECC, ST and SEDA to provide access to authentic information, so that the people understand and appreciate the necessary energy transition agenda balancing the challenges of the Energy Trilemma which is supply assurance, sustainability and affordability (Energy Trilemma – Security, Affordability and Sustainability).

Through MELP, said Nik Nazmi, concerted efforts can be arranged to create programs are more effective in forming an energy-sensitive society, at once cultivate civilized people who have CIVILIAN values.

“It is only now that the people can appreciate the importance of the role they can play for contribute to the energy transition towards a carbon neutral country. People need it too exposed to various initiatives in the energy transition and its importance to deal with the effects of climate change,” he said.

In that connection, according to Baharin, TNB will organize a Transition Conference Energy (Energy Transition Conference) which focuses on energy, municipalitiesand transportation at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, in August 2023.

He said, the conference brings together international thought leaders, experts, industry leaders, policy makers and related communities for two days at the Centre Kuala Lumpur Convention from 24 August 2023 to discuss transition challenges energy.

“The Energy Transition Conference and MELP are closely related as platforms provide information sharing of sustainable technology solutions in business speeding up its responsible energy transition drive. Focus on energy transition will further accelerate the digital transformation of customers to implement a sustainable and smart lifestyle in line with the wishes and needs of society.

“TNB itself accelerates the energy transition drive responsibly with increasing the enterprise value of TNB’s generation business, expanding the Tenaga Boleh market New (TBB), empowering the grid and developing the EV ecosystem,” said Baharin.

According to him, the initiative for the direction of sustainable living in the future is in line with the Goal Sustainable Development (SDG) which is a universal agenda by protecting the earth as well as creating economic, social and environmental balance.

Also present at the event were  NRECC deputy minister Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii; NRECC Secretary General, Dato’ Rosli Isa and high officials of the ministry; Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission (ST), Dato’ Ir. Ts. Abdul Razib Dawood and President/Chief Executive Officer of TNB, Dato’ Indera Ir. Baharin Din.
