No Pubic Funds Used To Import Chicken Eggs

Minister of Agriculture & Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the Malaysian government does not provide subsidies to imported chicken eggs as given to local chicken egg producers and that any expenses or risk of importing chicken eggs is fully borne by the company importers.

He said this as questions were raised on imported eggs as the price and if the public funds will be used to subsidise the cost after the Ministry agreed to import eggs from outside in order to address the shortage of supply the country is facing. The Minister also adds that MAFS has established import protocols to ensure that every animal and animal product that is to be brought into the country has to be free from any disease harmful to our fauna, animals, and people. Therefore, any company that wants to import animals and animal products need to refer to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to ensure the country the source is listed in the approved country.

As such a temporary special approval that will expire on June 30 this year has been granted to J&E Advance Tech Sdn. Bhd. and egg exporting companies in India that have the capacity to supply.

The Minister also said the permission to import chicken eggs can be terminated at any time when the domestic egg supply has recovered and is stable. As of October 2022 supply of eggs was short by -118,272,070, November by -157,543,291, and December by -1,282,094, however, in January the situation was overcome with positive +160,649,928.
