February Malaysia Airports Passenger Movements Hits 5.8 Million

Despite February being a shorter month, total passenger movements at MAHB network of airports continued to be buoyant, recording higher average daily passengers by 1,400 compared to January 2023.

February 2023 passenger movements for airports in Malaysia were encouraging, registering 5.8 million passengers, slightly above the 5 million mark registered between September to November 2022. Average daily passengers were also higher for both the international and domestic sectors compared to January 2023. Northeast Asia, Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia registered higher average daily passenger movements for February 2023 with a growth recorded between 3% to 20% compared to January 2023. It is also noteworthy that although the China sector is still in the early phase of recovery, passenger movements grew by 61% in February 2023 over January 2023.

Domestic passenger movements were equally positive, driven by the first term school holidays, with more than 112,000 average daily passengers. Overall, the encouraging demand for air travel was partly driven by travel plan backlogs and the opportunity for passengers to undertake weekend and short getaways as travelling became easier with the lifting of travel restrictions and reopening of borders.

Istanbul SGIA February 2023 total passenger movements grew by 17.8% over February 2022, registering 2.5million passengers. International and domestic passengers grew by 26.5% and 9.6% over February 2022, recording 1.3million and 1.2million passengers respectively. There was a slight slowdown in the overall daily traffic in the first five to six days after an earthquake struck southern and central Türkiye. Nevertheless, the passenger movements picked up and reached 92.9% recovery against the average daily passengers prior to the calamity for the remaining days of February. Subsequently, the first seven days of March have indicated a 9.1% increase in average daily passenger movements
