The Energy Commission has issued a safety advisory on precautions one can take ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration soon, the EC has called on the public to prioritise safety measures on matters pertaining to electricity and gas.
Tips on Electrical Safety include:
1. Make sure the electrical wiring at home is safe by: a. Test the Residual Current Device (PAB) by pressing the ‘T’ test button at least once a month. If the PAB works well, it will trigger and the electricity supply will be cut off immediately; b. Get the services of an electrical contractor registered with ST to replace the PAB if it does not work or is damaged; c. Check the cables of electrical equipment and ensure they are not torn or exposed.
2. Use approved electrical equipment and decorative lights as well as those that have the ST-SIRIM safety label.
3. Keep your hands dry when using electrical equipment.
4. Avoid overloading the socket by using electrical equipment that is excessive or with a high load.
5. Avoid hanging festive decorations on poles/electric lines or electrical installations.
6. Avoid using mobile phone while it is charging.
7. Make sure all switches and electrical equipment not used at home are turned off if you are going off for a long time.
Gas Safety Tips
1. Make sure the gas stove is safe to cook by: a. Use gas stove appliances that have the STSIRIM safety label. b. Be aware of the gas leak smell in the kitchen. c. Provide adequate ventilation openings in the kitchen area by opening windows or doors while cooking.
2. If you detect the smell of gas, make sure the following steps are taken: a. Open a window or door to promote ventilation. b. Do not on or off any electrical switch in the area. c. Do not bring equipment or equipment that can trigger ignition or “spark” in the area. d. Find gas leaks by using a Gas Leak Detector or soap bubbles and repair them immediately.
3. Do not leave the cooking gas stove unattended when in use.
4. Make sure the gas cylinder valve is closed if you are leaving for a long holiday.
5. Get the services of a gas contractor registered with ST for any gas pipe repair work at home.
