TNB: Residential Homes Energy Saving Tips During Hot Weather

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) advises residential home users to practice judicious use of electricity throughout the period of increased hot spots and haze due to the current dry weather.

Electricity consumption may increase due to relatively hot weather and consumers are in the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival season.

The Department of Meteorology Malaysia (MetMalaysia) issued a level one hot weather warning (caution) in some areas with the weather in question reaching between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius.

Simple practices for savings:

Among the electricity saving practices that are easy to do include:

Living room and outdoor

• Turn off air conditioning, fans and lights in empty rooms;

• Turn off the switch of electrical equipment such as a computer after finishing using it;

• When the weather is hot, cover the windows with thick curtains so that the heat does not enter;

• Do not leave electrical items in standby mode;

• Use LED bulbs that last longer and save more energy;

• Scrub a large amount of clothing at a time;

• Choose electrical appliances labelled energy efficient 4 or 5 stars by the Energy Commission (ST).

Bedroom

• At night, turn on the fan to help circulate the air in the room.

• Set a time for the air conditioner to turn off to save electricity consumption;

• Regular maintenance of the air conditioner allows it to operate at an optimal level. Clean the filter so that cold air can come out more smoothly;

Kitchen

• Avoid placing the refrigerator in a hot place such as a place exposed to direct sunlight or near a stove;

• Arrange items in the refrigerator with at least two-thirds of the capacity of the refrigerator compartment to let the air circulation space cool;

• Microwave ovens that use low energy can save electricity by 10-25%;

• Press the hot water switch only when you want to use it and close it immediately. Avoid open water heater switches when not in use;

• For washing machines, collect and wash clothes with a full load because electricity consumption is the same between a full or half load;

• Dry clothes in the sun instead of using a dryer after washing clothes.

Bathroom

• Avoid open water heater switches when not in use.

•Take a cold shower without using a water heater, the body will feel fresher.

To monitor electricity consumption directly, users are also encouraged to take advantage of the smart meter service if it is ready to be installed, either with the myTNB portal (www.mytnb.com.my) or the myTNB application.
