Local Tech Solution Providers Join Hands To Enhance Defence Command-And-Control Capabilities

Two of Malaysia’s leading defence technology solutions providers recently signed a ground-breaking memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on developing next-generation systems that will strengthen the Malaysian Armed Forces’ (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia or ATM) command-and-control capabilities while reducing the military’s dependency on foreign technologies.

The MOU was signed between Sapura Secured Technologies Sdn Bhd (SST), a leading technology innovator in cyber, electromagnetic, command-and-control, and mission-critical communications systems in defence and security market, and System Consultancy Services Sdn. Bhd (SCS), a pioneer in command- and-control systems and a specialist in software development and integration, communications and security solutions.

The collaboration will entail both companies combining their respective expertise to jointly design, develop and promote advanced command and control solutions, specifically in meeting ATM’s goal to consolidate its command-and-control infrastructure into a single integrated mission network. The two companies have also agreed to work together in coordinating field tests and management of its jointly developed system.

Sapura President and Group CEO Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin said, “The coming together of two fully Malaysian owned and operated companies to develop advanced technologies that will further strengthen the command-and-control capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces is reflective of the competence and know-how of our local talent within the digital technology and defence space.”

“Through our combined strength, SST and SCS are able to leverage on synergies and efficiencies that can propel market-leading technological innovations, developed by Malaysians for Malaysia, in the use of defending our national sovereignty,” he added.

SCS Executive Chairman Datuk Khalilur Rahman Ebrahim said, “We are confident that SST and SCS, as a team, can take ATM’s command-and-control technology to the next level while facilitating Malaysia’s aim towards technological self-reliance.”

“In addition to reducing our country’s dependency on foreign technologies within the critical area of homeland security, our collaboration will also enable ATM to quickly adapt to the rapid changes in technology so as to remain strong and effective while propelling our local defence industry to greater heights,” he added.

SST, amember of Sapura Group, has close to five decades of experience in spearheading national programs through its capabilities in research & development, industrialisation & manufacturing and managed services, focusing on radio technologies, mission-critical applications, network connectivity and advanced simulation systems.

Established in 1993, SCS is the pioneer in the development of Malaysian in-house command and control solution that has been successfully deployed and used up to this date. SCS emphasizes the importance of quality in every aspect of their business operations. At the same time the company is committed in ensuring continuous improvement and proper technology transfer to ensure expandability of systems and support.

Apart from providing systems for defence and homeland security, SCS has expanded its portfolio of solutions in Smart and Safe Cities from 2017 onwards. The effort can be seen in success of securing contracts on various smart city initiatives under the Smart Selangor Smart City program.
