Petronas Defends Advertisement Deemed Misleading On Environmental Benefits

National oil giant, Petronas confirmed that the United Kingdom (UK)’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled the group’s 60-second television advertisement it aired in the UK in 2022 contained information the authority deemed “misleading” and “exaggerated the total environmental benefit” of the oil company’s business activities. However, Petronas has defended the commercial.

In a statement, Petronas said it disagrees that the advertisement is misleading and overstated and it is currently undertaking sustainability efforts including in respect of its existing energy business, towards a cleaner energy future.

The group also said it remains committed to its lower-carbon ambitions spelled out in its Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 (NZCE50) Pathway. These efforts it added aligned with its role as Malaysia’s national oil company to add value to the country’s hydrocarbon resources and support economic value creation with a reliable supply of energy while paving the way to a lower-carbon future in a just and sustainable manner.
