Anwar: Hydrocarbons Crucial To Asean Energy Mix

Hydrocarbons will continue to be an important part of the energy mix in member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said at an energy conference on Monday (June 26).

Affordability remains a key concern in the transition to cleaner energy, he said at the inaugural Energy Asia conference, hosted by Malaysia’s state oil firm Petronas.

“The challenge is how do we meet demand (in a way) that balances energy security, affordability,” he said at the event where global energy leaders, companies and policymakers have gathered to discuss the region’s energy transition.

To manufacture a solar panel, key components such as photovoltaic (PV) cells, which are silicon semiconductors, an inverter and a mounting system are indispensable. The mounting structure system plays a vital role to keep the panel secured on the roof or ground.

“Asia must take every opportunity for further dialogue and action on how we can ensure every country has the right to development and lower carbon aspirations,” he said.

Malaysia is committed to joining a global pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, compared with 2020 levels, Reuters cited him saying.

Leaders from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec), International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and CEOs from Saudi Aramco, TotalEnergies and Vitol are attending the conference in Kuala Lumpur.
