Dutch Coalition Government Collapses

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced his resignation on Friday after the four-party coalition government collapsed due to disagreements over immigration policy, Anadolu Agency reported.

The decision by the Netherlands’ longest-serving prime minister to step down comes after the collapse of a ruling coalition that failed to reach an agreement on how to deal with asylum seekers entering the country.

After days of negotiations between key Cabinet members led by Rutte, an agreement could not be reached and the ruling coalition collapsed, the NL Times previously reported, citing sources.

The fall of the coalition government ends the fourth term of the Rutte Cabinet which was sworn in on 10 January 2022. Known as the Teflon PM Rutte survived many scandals that seem to slide off like butter on a pancake but the longest-serving leader in the Netherlands mystified the Dutch media when he set a series of tough demands on immigration that his coalition could not accept.
