NETR Phase 1 Implementation Supports NRECC’s 70% RE In Electricity Supply Commitment: Nik Nazmi

The Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), as the Ministry responsible for planning and regulating the development of electricity supply and the country’s climate change policy, welcomes the implementation of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Phase 1 of its implementation will be realised through the implementation of 10 flagship projects and initiatives.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the projects and initiatives which have been identified to be implemented until 2040 include 6 flagship projects that are expected to support NRECC’s desire to increase the mix of renewable energy capacity (RBC) in electricity supply to 70% and achieve the country’s aspirational goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by year 2050.

The minister, in a statement today (July 30), said the related flagship projects and initiatives are as follows:

a. The Energy Efficiency Initiative will reduce the intensity of energy use as well as the carbon footprint of electricity users and will be implemented through the presentation of the Energy Efficiency Bill and the implementation of an energy audit for the rail transport sector under the Conditional Energy Audit Grant 2.0;

b. The Renewable Energy (RE) Zone Project is expected to increase RE capacity in electricity supply and is implemented through four (4) methods, namely the development of an integrated zone based on the concept of self-reliance & self-contained, the development of solar parks in five (5) locations across the country, project development floating solar on TNB’s hydroelectric dam and the implementation of solar leasing on residential roofs;

c. The Energy Storage Project is expected to increase the resilience of the national grid system to allow for the inclusion of higher RE capacity as well as more regular operation of the distributed generation system. This project will be implemented through the development of a utility-scale energy storage system;

d. The Hydrogen Project for Electricity Supply is expected to be able to explore alternative low-carbon electricity generation technologies and be implemented through the application of hydrogen and ammonia mixed fuel combustion technology in coal-fired power plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;

e. The Biomass Demand Creation Initiative is expected to be able to increase RE capacity from biomass sources and is implemented through the development of centralised power generation plants in biomass clusters; and the application of biomass fuel combustion technology in coal-fired power plants; and

f. The Future Mobility Initiative is expected to reduce the transport sector’s carbon footprint and is implemented through the increased installation of electric vehicle charging stations along highways and identified commercial areas; development of hydrogen refuelling stations; electrification of public transport; and the installation of a solar system to generate electricity for non-traction operation needs of rail transport system operators.

The implementation of flagship projects and initiatives that have been identified under the NETR will be focused on realising their implementation in support of the energy transition commitment led by this Ministry, Nik Nazmi added.
