An Average Malaysian Spends RM667 Monthly On Groceries: Picodi

In a recent study conducted by Picodi.com‘s analyst team, statistical data from 105 countries has unveiled intriguing insights into global grocery spending patterns. The data highlights significant variations in consumer behaviors, with grocery expenditure ranging from a mere few percent to over half of overall consumer spending across different countries.

The analysis of the collected data underscores the diverse spending habits when it comes to food and non-alcoholic beverages consumed at home. Notably, countries like the USA (6.7%), Singapore (8.4%), the UK (8.7%), Ireland (9.2%), and Switzerland (9.9%) allocate less than a tenth of their total spending to groceries.

Comparatively, Malaysia secures the 65th position out of the 105 countries evaluated, with food and non-alcoholic beverages accounting for 27.5% of spending on goods and services. This proportion aligns closely with spending percentages observed in Türkiye (27.3%), Sri Lanka (27.7%), and Thailand (28.3%).

Among the nations featured in the study, Nigeria, Myanmar, and Kenya emerge as the leaders in grocery spending, allocating a significant chunk of their consumer budgets. Nigeria, for instance, devotes a substantial 59% of its expenses to groceries, followed closely by Myanmar (56.6%) and Kenya (56.1%).

Grocery Spending Patterns in the APAC Region

Turning the spotlight onto the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the study reveals noteworthy trends in grocery expenditure. Hong Kong takes the lead with a remarkable average monthly grocery spending of $306. This high spending can be attributed to the overall elevated cost of living in the city. New Zealand follows closely with an average monthly grocery spending of $290, while Japan completes the top three with $288, reflecting the relatively high prices in these countries.

Conversely, the study identifies countries with the lowest grocery spending in the APAC region. Myanmar stands out with a modest monthly grocery expenditure of $42, followed by India with $37, and Pakistan with $32. These figures highlight the economic variations across the APAC region, where factors such as income levels and cost of living significantly influence consumer spending habits.

Malaysian Grocery Spending Landscape

For Malaysia, the analysis reveals that an average individual spends $145 (equivalent to RM 667) per month on groceries. This figure provides valuable insight into the country’s economic landscape and consumer behavior, indicating a moderate level of grocery expenditure.

The variations in spending patterns underscore the influence of economic factors, cultural preferences, and cost of living on individual and national spending decisions. As the world continues to evolve, understanding these trends becomes crucial for businesses, policymakers, and researchers seeking to comprehend the dynamics of consumer behavior on a global scale.
