Govt Launches People’s Facilities Initiative To Transform Small Public Infrastructure Projects

The Ministry of Economy has developed a People’s Facilities Initiative (PFI) system that allows citizens (individuals or organisations) to apply directly to the Ministry of Economy for the implementation of small public infrastructure projects in their respective areas.

The allocation provided is limited and must be spent to implement projects approved in 2023.

The cost of one PFI project does not exceed RM200,000.00.

This initiative is an aid from the Federal Government and aims to democratize government funds in financing the implementation of small public infrastructure projects that are under the jurisdiction and responsibility of State Governments and Local Governments (Local Authorities – PBT).

Approval of allocations is included to finance small public infrastructure projects that are under the responsibility of the State Government and Local Government.

In this regard, the Federal Government provides financial assistance to the State Government and PBT to implement projects requested by the people directly to the Ministry of Economy through the IKR application.

The cooperation of the State Government and Local Government is needed to verify the projects requested by the people and to be able to implement projects that are approved promptly based on the principle of ‘best value for money’.

The implementation of IKR also aims to help small contractors throughout Malaysia who will benefit from these small projects as well as speed up the implementation of small public infrastructure projects throughout the country for the benefit of the people.

As of 25 August 2023, the Ministry of Economy has received 3,398 applications, of which 1,491 applications were received from individuals, 989 from non-governmental organizations and 918 applications received from government organizations, since it was launched on 20 June 2023.

A list of 1,385 applications has been submitted to the relevant PBT/executive agency for review before disbursement of funds is made. Project applications that are still in the review process will be submitted in the near future before being extended to PBT for confirmation.

A total of 245 applications were rejected for not meeting the justification and application requirements under the IKR.

The public can still apply for assistance for small public infrastructure projects through the PFI website at ikr.ekonomi.gov.my.
