Malaysia To Lose RM17 Billion In Next 25 Years If Disaster Risk Measures Not In Place

The country is expected to suffer losses of up to RM17 billion in the next 25 years if disaster risk measures are not implemented.

Following this, the environment and climate change minister said the proposed establishment of the National Geological Disaster Center (PBGN) coincided with addressing the impact of the threat of climate change. “PBGN is established to carry out functions such as high-impact research and the development of disaster early warning systems in focus areas. “In addition, it is also able to develop prediction models, early warnings and public awareness regarding the threat of geological disasters,” said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Nik Nazmi added that PBGN provides specialized technical expertise services in various related fields such as disaster assessment and forensics, engineering geology, as well as early warning system networks. “With the establishment of this PBGN, national geological disaster management can be implemented effectively to deal with the impact of global climate change thus reducing the impact of disasters,” he said.

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the establishment of the PBGN this year to monitor the effectiveness of the tsunami, flood and landslide early warning system. According to him, the establishment of the center also aims to improve the efficiency of disaster response to ensure the safety of the people.
