The Unprecedented Value of Soft Skills in the Modern Workplace

In a world marked by rapid technological advances and the relentless march of automation, one critical factor continues to stand the test of time when it comes to career success: soft skills.

Often overshadowed by their more quantifiable counterparts like technical proficiency or academic qualifications, soft skills are quietly emerging as the unsung heroes of the modern workplace. These intangible qualities, which encompass communication, teamwork, adaptability, and emotional intelligence, are increasingly recognised as indispensable attributes that can define the trajectory of an individual’s career.

In an era where digital transformations and artificial intelligence redefine job descriptions daily, it is indeed ironic that what sets individuals apart in the workplace is their distinctly human capacity to connect, empathise and collaborate effectively. Soft skills are the ‘secret sauce’ empowering professionals to navigate the ever-shifting tides of the business world, ensuring not just survival but thriving in their careers.

To shed light on the profound significance of soft skills, Business Today sought insights from industry leaders who have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of these qualities in the workplace. Their experiences underscore the notion that, in today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, the ability to excel in soft skills is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ but a ‘must-have’ for anyone aspiring to flourish in their chosen field.

Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) Chairman Chiew Kok Hin emphasised the critical importance of soft skills in their line of work. Chiew noted that analytical skills, the ability to think creatively, technical communication, collaboration and strategic thinking are all pivotal.

“These skills enable MyIX to proactively address ever-threatening cybersecurity issues while delivering top-quality service to their members in a safe manner,” he said.

Chiew explained that while qualifications may suggest knowledge of one’s role, excelling in soft skills is paramount. In fact, candidates with exceptional soft skills can stand out even if their academic grades are merely average. Chiew stressed the need for individuals who are not only tech-savvy but also capable of effective teamwork and quick thinking to ensure Malaysia’s bright digital future.

MyIX is also currently gearing up to launch its ‘MyIX Talent Development Programme’ in collaboration with the Forward College of Technology & Future Skills. This initiative is crafted to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands. Participants, including recent graduates and working professionals from member companies, will embark on a 5 – 7 day intensive training regimen, diving deep into vital areas such as IP Network and Systems Operations, as well as strategies for DDoS prevention and traffic monitoring.

“The programme endeavours not only to be a hub of learning but a forge where agile and adept professionals are shaped, ready to tackle real-world challenges with a fresh perspective and a revitalised skill set, thereby further enhancing Malaysia’s stride into a vibrant digital future,” said Chiew.

Wavelet Solutions Sdn Bhd CEO Vincent Lee emphasises specific criteria when hiring talent. He values individuals who not only possess a passion for technology but also embody ‘Wavelet Values’, which include embracing failure, maintaining perseverance and staying technologically current.

“These values reflect the need for a dynamic and resilient workforce in the tech industry. In an era where innovation and adaptability are paramount, team members who embrace challenges, persist in the face of adversity and continuously learn and adapt are highly valued,” said Lee.

Moreover, diversity is a cornerstone of Wavelet’s culture, with employees from various nationalities from throughout the four corners of the globe.

“This diversity enriches the Wavelet workplace by providing different perspectives and fostering an appreciation of various cultures. It enhances innovation and adaptability, making us as a company more competitive in the tech sector,” he added.

Meanwhile, Commerce.Asia Executive Chairman and Advisor to PIKOM Ganesh Kumar Bangah said that, as a tech entrepreneur operating within the ever-evolving domains of e-commerce and digital growth marketing, his perspective on hiring is deeply influenced by the rapid advancements in technology, especially the emergence of Generative AI and other innovative solutions. The relevance of certain skills is fluid, given that what seems pertinent today may become obsolete tomorrow due to technological progress.

“Thus, when it comes to hiring fresh graduates, my inclination leans towards valuing soft skills even over stellar academic achievements. I prioritise candidates with pronounced soft skills even if they have average grades, as opposed to those with impressive academic records but only average to subpar soft skills,” he said.

As such, Ganesh prioritises soft skills over stellar academic achievements and values adaptability, creative problem-solving and effective communication and teamwork.

These attributes, he believes, are essential in a tech-driven environment where market trends and technologies are in perpetual flux.

LGMS Berhad Executive Chairman Fong Choong Fook, meanwhile, highlighted the importance of ethical discernment in the cybersecurity sector. He explained that this skill, along with analytical thinking and effective communication, is crucial due to the sensitive nature of the information they handle.

Fook emphasised that ethical standards go beyond safeguarding data and extend to protecting individual privacy, corporate interests and national security. Upholding these standards ensures trust within the team and throughout the LGMS ecosystem and industry.

“While technical prowess is indispensable, the integrity of our operations depends significantly on the ethical decision-making of our team members,” said Fong.

“Applicants might come with commendable grades and deep technical expertise, yet if there is any semblance of questionable ethics, it raises potential risks in safeguarding the digital realms we are entrusted to protect.

“For us, ethical discernment stands alongside technical acumen in safeguarding digital assets, ensuring that our cybersecurity measures are conducted with utmost integrity and in highest accordance with legal and moral frameworks,” added Fong.

All in all, the recognition of the unparalleled value of soft skills in the modern workplace transcends industry boundaries.

These intangible attributes are becoming increasingly essential as industries evolve, redefining the parameters of success.

As organisations and individuals continue to invest in these crucial soft skills, they are poised to not only thrive but also shape a more adaptable and resilient workforce for the future.
