When it comes to battling lung cancer, it’s not just a run; it’s a race against time, a sprint towards saving lives.
In conjunction with Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Sunway University’s School of Medical and Life Sciences is partnering with Lung Cancer Network Malaysia, Sunway Biological Society, Sunway Future Nurses Club, and Sunway Sports Council to organise the inaugural Ready, Set, Breathe! Lung Cancer Awareness Charity Run, which will be happening on 11 November 2023. This event isn’t just about breaking a sweat; it’s about breaking the silence on lung cancer through the power of early screening.
According to the latest available data from our National Cancer Registry (NCR 2012-2016) and the Malaysian Study on Cancer Survival (MySCan 2018), lung cancer has taken centre stage as the leading cancer, and leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Malaysia. Alarmingly, almost 95% of patients here are diagnosed too late – at stage III or stage IV – where treatment is more challenging, costly and less effective. These grim findings highlight the urgency of promoting awareness of screening for individuals at risk of lung cancer and the importance of early detection, as early-stage lung cancer has a good prognosis and can often be cured with surgery, as part of multi-modal therapy.

If you have questions about how these cancers can be detected early, join us to learn directly from the experts of LCNM, MAKNA, and the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Society of Malaysia (NPCSM) about the various forms of cancer including lung and nose cancer. The Sunway University Department of Nursing will be on standby to provide basic health and blood pressure screening, while representatives of the NPCSM will be providing free on-site nasopharyngo endoscopies.
