Selangor State Budget To Be Tabled Later Today

Selangor is to table its state Budget today with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari scheduled to be in the Selangor State Assembly amidst a different scenario than last year.

The Chief Minister does not have a two-thirds majority like he did in the past and will be a testing time for the state election winner, not all spending will be easily sanctioned, however, the CM has stated in the past he is open to the challenges. The richest state in the country will be allocating a large swath of the budget to social development like affordable housing and infrastructure, while communal activities like insurance and medical aid proved to be successful in the past. In 2022, Amiruddin announced a state budget of RM2.45 billion with a higher deficit, and this year the state has been recording a better-than-expected tax collection, so it will be interesting to see how Selangor plans to allocate the extra collection.

For 2024, the State Government said in drafting the budget, it had held an engagement session with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry so that the direction is in line with Putrajaya. According to Speaker Lau Weng San, the budget presentation session was to be followed by a council meeting which is expected to last for two weeks until November 24.

His Majesty the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj ordered the debate to be conducted in an orderly manner without the use of rude and disrespectful language.
