Unrest In Myanmar Leaves 109 Malaysians Stranded, Mostly Scam Victims

A total of 109 Malaysian citizens are reported stranded in the city of Laukkaing, northern Myanmar, following unrest in the region, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The ministry stated in a press release that most of these Malaysians are believed to be victims of job offer scams abroad.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Malaysian Embassies in Yangon and Beijing, as well as the Consulate General of Malaysia in Kunming, is coordinating rescue efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar as well as that of the People’s Republic of China before finalising the arrangements to safely repatriate all Malaysian citizens involved.

“This effort is also receiving the cooperation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Royal Malaysia Police, and the Malaysian Immigration Department. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to enhance efforts to address the issues faced by Malaysian citizens who fall victim to fraudulent job offer schemes abroad,” the statement said.

Malaysians seeking employment abroad are reminded to exercise caution and verify the nature of the job offers.

Meanwhile, Singapore and Thailand have managed to evacuate their citizens.
