Parliament Aims To Become World’s First Zero-Emission Legislative House With Solar Power Integration By June 2024

The Malaysian Parliament is set to adopt solar energy in its operations by June next year as part of its commitment to a sustainable future. Tan Sri Johari Abdul, the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, highlighted that this move is in line with the government’s goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2050.

The Public Works Department is currently finalising the tendering process for the project.

Johari expressed optimism, stating that the Malaysian Parliament could become the world’s first parliament house powered entirely by renewable energy.

He emphasised the environmental benefits, envisioning a Parliament where visitors can experience clean air and good oxygen upon entry.

This initiative is intended to serve as a catalyst for other government departments and agencies to embrace renewable energy, emphasising its cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness.

Johari underlined the policymakers’ unwavering commitment to sustainable development and green financing initiatives. He stressed the importance of taking action and fostering collaboration across all sectors to ensure a comprehensive transition to a more sustainable future.

Addressing regional concerns, Johari emphasised the critical need for climate change mitigation and adaptation in Southeast Asia. He urged ASEAN economies to lead in transforming towards low-carbon and climate-resilient practices to achieve socio-economic prosperity.

In an additional announcement, Johari, also a National Scouts Council member, revealed plans for a charity dinner on December 1 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The event aims to raise funds for scout programs benefiting the community and preparing youth for the reintroduction of the National Service Training Programme (PLKN).
