Former Education Minister Calls Out McDonald’s Action To Sue BDS As Bad Marketing

Former Education Minister, Maslee Malik posted on his X platform calling out McDonald’s action to sue Boycott Divestment Sanctions as a bad marketing tactic as it will only enhance the boycott call against them.

This follows the fast food chain’s recent move to sue the group for US$1.31 million which it accused is behind the reason for the company to lose customers resulting in alleged massive loss of revenue.

The local franchise which is operated by Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd said the business has been severely affected due to BDS. The registered NGO was then served a writ of summon by McDonald’s but BDS said it categorically denies the accusations and will allow the courts to decide.

McDonald’s also said it has been transparent and consistent with its communications that it does not support nor condone the current conflict in the Middle East and like all Malaysians, its sympathies go out to the innocent victims in Gaza. As such it has contributed a sum of RM1 million to the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund launched by the government and will continue to pray for the end of the conflict and continued peace in Gaza.

The company said it does not channel any sales, profits, royalties or franchise fees from restaurant operations to support any political cause or conflict in any part of the world.

Maszlee further added that by suing, “people will only see them as standing on the side of those Children Butchers”. He also wondered who has been advising the company for such poor tactics.
