MACC Replies Mahathir’s ‘Why No Investigation’ On Anwar Claim

MACC has issued a statement on former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad claim on why the highest anti corruption body did not conduct an investigation into the matters raised in the sworn statement of the former Assistant Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Dato’ Abdul Murad bin Khalid against Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The commission in its statement said the based on its records, the Anti-Corruption Agency (BPR) at the time, had opened a total of six investigation papers to investigate Dato’ Seri Anwar following Dato’ Abdul Murad’s sworn statement which was issued on 26 October 1999. It said there was an in-depth, comprehensive and detailed investigation with the help of Bank Negara Malaysia including both in and outside the country like the United Kingdom and Singapore. MACC said the results of the investigation showed that there was no case against Dato’ Seri Anwar.

Accordingly, MACC added the six investigation papers were submitted to the Attorney General’s Office on 12 August 2002 and the Attorney General’s Office decided that no charges will be brought against any party.

On Mahathir’s allegation that MACC and ACA did not conduct an investigation against Dato’ Seri Anwar based on Dato’ Abdul Murad’s sworn statement is not true despite the matter happening during the leadership of Tun Dr. Mahathir when he was then the Prime Minister.
