MCMC Receives 238 Scam Phone Complaints In 2024

Communications and Multimedia Commission Malaysia has warned of impersonators pretending to be MCMC officers making phone calls with the aim of deceiving victims to divulge personals information.

Apparently, the caller will threaten the victim by stating there is a complaint against the line used by the victim and claims that the victim will be in trouble if the victim fails to follow the instructions given leading to the line being blocked or blacklisted. The regulator said from January 1 to 25 2024, a total of 259 complaints were received and out of the total 238 inquiry calls received where about impersonation.

MCMC has informed that all matters related to telecommunication will be notified via official channels only such as email, website or social media platforms owned by the commission. It has also reminded that government authorities will not ask for any individual’s personal banking details and information and has asked the public to be vigilant and get proper confirmation.

Never disclose personal information to unknown individuals and do not transfer money to the account which is doubtful. Also, people are advised to make the restriction settings up caller’s phone number (block call/reject list) or get software or applications to block incoming calls or SMS to the phone line owned.
