PM Says Pardon Is Not By Law But King’s Prerogative, Calls For Restrain

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for refrain on discussing on the matter related to the pardon accorded to former Prime Minister Najib Razak who is currently in prison for the 1MDB case. He reminded everyone that the pardon is the King’s prerogative and not by law, hence its up to the Yang DiPertuan to accord a pardon to whom and when he likes.

To note, when it comes to matter in relation to the royalty there are specific laws under that forbid insulting or making untoward remarks towards the royal institution, which is something former MP Tony Pua is about to find out.

Najib received a 50% reduction on his jail sentence from 12 years to 6 years and fines reduced to RM50 million after the King pardoned the embattled UMNO party leader on his last day at the throne.

The matter has roiled parties especially from the opposition who have called for more transparency from the pardon board on why the high profile case that dealt with the nations most embarrassing corruption case could be so easily pardoned.

Anwar’s Unity Government which relies heavily on UMNO to stay in power has been criticised for the latest incident which sets back on the his strict stance in combating corruption in the country, this was commented by former Bersih non–governmental organisation president Ambiga Sreenevasan who said she was disappointed with the Prime Minister.
