Employer To Pay RM1 Million To Pengerang Foreign Workers

On the 733 foreign workers who were left stranded in Pengerang, Johor they have presumably found justice, when the court awarded claims to the workers after the case was brought for hearing by the Ministry of Human Resources and the Labour Department.

The claims filed involve the payment of wages that have not been paid since they were brought into the country and not given jobs as promised. According to a statement released by MOHR, both parties reached a mutual agreement with salary payment of a total of RM1,035,557.50 to the workers concerned. The Ministry said workers who are brought in and not given employment is still the employer’s responsibility to pay the employee’s salary as enforced by the Minister of Human Resources.

The company will also place the workers to a new employer through the Employer Exchange Process Special. MOHR says the success of the proceeding is a ‘landmark case’ that will be a reference in labour cases as it involves foreign workers who are brought in legal but not given a job upon their arrival in the country and ignored.

The ministry added employers found guilty will be blacklisted by the authorities and the rest foreign worker quota will be cancelled.
