Indonesia Managed To Reduce 875.7 Million Tons Of C02e In 2022

Indonesia’s efforts to suppress the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated have resulted in a decrease of 875.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) based on data in 2022.

As reported by local media Antara, the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar said “The assessment on national GHG in 2022 shows that the amount of actual GHG emissions generated by Indonesia was at 1.23 gigatons of CO2e, or a decline of 875.7 million tons of CO2e, or around 42 percent,” she remarked.

Bakar explained that the figure is close to the targets of lowering 31.89 percent of emissions through unilateral means and 43.2 percent of emissions with international support by 2030, as outlined in Indonesia’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

She elaborated that the NDC pushes Indonesia to reduce 727.33 million tons of CO2e in the energy sector, 59.19 million tons of CO2e in the industry sector, and 90.64 million tons of CO2e in the agriculture sector.

The targets also include suppressing 221.37 million tons of CO2e by preventing forest and peatland fires and 130 million tons of CO2e by properly managing waste.

“We need to keep up our work while maintaining policies and their implementation,” Bakar affirmed.

Indonesia’s feats in suppressing GHG emissions have been acknowledged internationally, including by Norway, through the result-based contribution scheme that provides Indonesia with incentive funds for its performance in lowering emissions.

She noted that Norway had disbursed the funds in three stages, with the latest being in January this year. Meanwhile, the fourth payment is expected to be completed later in September, she added.

The minister further remarked that the Indonesian government had also established collaboration with other parties to achieve emission reduction targets through various schemes, such as the Green Climate Fund, World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility-Carbon Fund, and Jambi BioCarbon Fund.
