Penang Still Studying Solid Waste Management Act

Penang Chief Minister said the enactment of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) is still at the discussion stage.

Tuan Chow Kon Yeow said that the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) had given a briefing on the matter to the State Government Exco meeting few weeks ago. Kon Yeow who is also Exco for Finance, Economic Development & Land and Communications stated that the Penang State Government will examine the matter in more depth including studying the advantages and disadvantages of the use.

“Many states have adopted this act except Penang and a few other states. “Therefore, the State Government will examine the effect of using this act in terms of benefits, advantages, disadvantages and various other necessary aspects. “We will also compare the state of states that have adopted this act with states that manage their own solid waste before any decision can be made,” he said.

It was recently reported that Penang may become the ninth state to adopt Act 672 after Selangor which in principle has expressed its agreement to adopt the act. Currently, seven states have adopted, namely Kedah, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Perlis and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. It is understood that the act is to ensure uniformity of law in the control and regulation of matters related to solid waste management and public cleaning to ensure more efficient, sustainable, effective solid waste management and stimulate the circular economy.
