Malaysians Advised To Be Cautious After Earthquake In New York

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Consulate General of Malaysia in New York confirmed that an earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude struck near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, at 10.20am (local time) on Friday and has issued a notice advising Malaysians to be cautious.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement today said tremors were felt throughout the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) and as far north as Massachusetts. According to the statement, although no major damage or injuries were reported, the authorities are still assessing the current situation.

Ground stop notices have been issued by local authorities at major airports and some public transport services have been temporarily suspended. The Foreign Ministry said the Consulate General of Malaysia in New York is actively coordinating efforts with local authorities to obtain more information. Malaysians in the affected areas have been advised to be alert, cautious and follow the latest developments and advice issued by local authorities.
