Petronas Warns Of Scams Using AI Rendered Images Of Its Officials

Petronas said it has been made aware of multiple occasions of unauthorised and fraudulent use of its company name and logo, as well as the name of its President and Group CEO, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

The national oil and gas company said many of these incidents involve the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) software to impersonate PETRONAS officials, typically by altering and manipulating their image and voice.

The manipulated images, which are circulated on the internet particularly on social media platforms it said are being used to convey untrue messages, some with the intent of manipulating the public to participate in scams and non-existent investment schemes.

Petronas said it has made reports to the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been lodged with regard to these instances of misuse.
