Former IGP Tan Sri Hanif Omar Passes Away

Former inspector general of police (IGP) Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar died at 2.15am today. He was 85.

News of Mohammed Hanif’s passing was shared by his son Abdul Rahmat Omar through a brief statement.

He was the country’s Chief of Police from 1974 to 1994, at the height of Tun Dr Mahathir’s premiership, a record 20 years as IGP. His successor Rahim Noor was instrumental for the arrest for current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was later also reported to have given Anwar a black eye which became the symbol of the party’s reformation call.

Harif Omar was known to be a diligent and efficient leader of the police force, who helped cleaned up the cities from notorious gangster rule.
