Perak Finally Agrees To Supply Water To Penang

The Perak State Government has agreed to supply fresh water to Penang via the Kerian Unity Green Industrial Park into Seberang Prai, this was announced by the Prime Minister today (5 May)

Anwar Ibrahim said this agreement was approved by both the Sultan of Perak and the State Chief Minister, the piped water from Sungai Perak will be directed into Penang through the industrial park. The next step, Anwar said was to establish discussion with the State of Kedah which is also close to Penang on arrangement for water supply.

Penang, the country’s most industrialised state often faces water supply issues due to it being an island and lack of water catchment areas. This has led to disruptions on various occasions especially during non rainy seasons.

The negotiations between both states had been often rocky and uncertain when both were formed under different party’s, however now under the Unity Government a more practical approach is being agreed upon.
