Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the government will introduce a national disaster risk management policy to better prepare for the upcoming monsoon transition phase.
The policy, being drafted by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), aims to enhance the country’s resilience to disasters, particularly in light of climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, emphasized that the policy focuses on integrating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) across all sectors of national development.
He noted that DRR involves not only infrastructure improvements but also raising awareness, prevention, and fostering collaboration among the government, NGOs, the private sector, and local communities.
“To succeed, this policy requires ongoing efforts and commitment from all parties. Together, we can make Malaysia a safer country prepared for future challenges,” he stated in a Facebook post.
As Malaysia enters the monsoon transition phase, which is expected to last until early November, Ahmad Zahid also announced the launch of National Preparedness Month on October 3 in Kota Tinggi, Johor. This initiative aims to enhance public awareness and preparedness for potential disasters, including increasingly common floods and thunderstorms.
