Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd has officially commenced the Westports 2 Container Terminal Expansion, marking a significant milestone for the company and Malaysia’s logistics sector.
The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who addressed ambassadors, government officials, and senior management from Westports and other organisations.
Anwar emphasised that the expansion is vital for preparing Malaysia’s logistics industry to accommodate increased foreign direct investments (FDIs).
He highlighted that the development aligns with the Unity Government’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships and reflects the Malaysia MADANI vision, which aims to solve problems and improve the standard of living for the people.
Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam bin Abdullah, Executive Chairman and Group Managing Director of Westports, stated that the expansion is essential for meeting the growing demands of global trade. He noted that Westports 2 will incorporate sustainable practices and the latest technologies to enhance competitiveness while minimising environmental impact.
The announcement follows Westports’ recent 30th anniversary celebration, where the company was recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records for having the longest linear berth, measuring 6,585 meters. The Minister of Transport, Yang Berhormat Loke Siew Fook, commended Westports for its development, noting the crucial role of various government agencies in supporting the company’s growth.
This expansion project positions Westports as a leading player in the regional maritime industry and strengthens Malaysia’s trade connectivity.
