Malaysia’s digital economy continues its robust growth, with digital investments under the Malaysia Digital initiative soaring by 125% in the second quarter of 2025 to RM29.47 billion from RM13.11 billion in the previous quarter.
The surge reinforces Malaysia’s standing as a premier destination for digital foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia.
The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) shared that as of June 2025, 261 companies approved under the Malaysia Digital initiative have collectively committed RM42.58 billion in investments, with the potential to generate 17,495 high-skilled jobs over the next five years.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo described the sharp increase as “exceptional growth”, pointing to Malaysia’s digital readiness, strong innovation ecosystem and rising investor confidence.
“Beyond numbers, these investments represent thousands of opportunities for Malaysians and long-term uplift for our digital economy,” he said.
Leading the investment inflow were Singapore (RM13.91 billion), the US (RM6.44 billion) and China (RM2.97 billion).
MDEC highlighted that the Data Centre and Cloud sector led all verticals with RM30.95 billion in investments, driven by rising regional demand for data infrastructure.
“Of this, Data Centre companies alone contributed RM13.45 billion, reflecting strong confidence in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and connectivity,” it said.
It added that two other high-growth sectors also drew substantial capital and talent potential, including artificial intelligence with RM3.29 billion in investments while estimated to create 6,920 jobs and the global business services with RM4.99 billion and 5,632 jobs expected.
MDEC Chief Executive Officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil emphasised that the initiative’s success lies not just in the volume of investment but in its tangible economic and social impact.
“We’re focused on catalytic value — in innovation, jobs and long-term transformation. MDEC will continue to support investor facilitation, talent development and ecosystem building,” he said.
Both Anuar Fariz and Gobind stressed that as the Malaysia Digital initiative continues to gain global momentum, the government reaffirmed its commitment to driving inclusive innovation, digital economy growth and regional leadership in the tech sector.
