Honeywell, PETRONAS Team Up On Advanced Carbon Capture Solution

Honeywell and PETRONAS have partnered to develop a scalable and energy-efficient carbon capture solution aimed at industrial applications, combining both companies’ advanced technologies.

The collaboration integrates PETRONAS’ Membrane Contactor (MBC) technology with Honeywell UOP’s Advanced Solvent Carbon Capture (ASCC) process, creating a solvent-based, post-combustion CO₂ capture solution designed to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs and enhance reliability in industrial decarbonisation efforts.

Formalised through a Strategic Collaboration Agreement during Energy Asia 2025 in June, the partnership marks a significant step in accelerating carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) initiatives in Malaysia. A pilot-scale project in Malaysia is planned to evaluate the integrated system’s performance and broader industrial applicability.

“Honeywell’s proprietary amine-based solvent technology, part of the ASCC process and PETRONAS’ MBC absorber technology complement each other to create an integrated solution that drives efficiency, cost reduction and broader adoption of carbon capture technology,” said Honeywell UOP APAC General Manager Tsui Tsui Young.

PETRONAS Vice President of Group Technology and Commercialisation, Izwan Ismail, added, “This collaboration once again demonstrates the new possibilities that emerge when corporations unite within innovation ecosystems, especially in pursuing our journey towards Net Zero. By co-creating better solutions that accelerate industrial decarbonisation, we unlock meaningful value for stakeholders and pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient industrial future.”

Honeywell UOP’s ASCC technology is designed to capture over 95% of CO₂ from post-combustion flue gas applications, while PETRONAS’ MBC technology combines membrane separation with chemical absorption in a compact system tailored for hard-to-abate sectors.
