Nvidia Corp. will invest as much as US$100 billion in OpenAI to support the building of new data centres and the infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence.
The investment is intended to help OpenAI build data centres with a capacity of 10 gigawatts of power using Nvidia’s advanced AI chips to train and deploy its models. Nvidia will receive equity in OpenAI, with the investment provided in stages, starting with the first US$10 billion once the first gigawatt of computing power is deployed.
“Everything starts with compute,” OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said. “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilise what we’re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
The companies said they have signed a letter of intent and look forward to finalising the details of this new phase of strategic partnership in the coming weeks.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, used by roughly 700 million people weekly, requires immense computing power. Altman recently noted that new “compute-intensive” products will be launched in the coming weeks, some of which will initially be limited to Pro subscribers or carry additional fees.
Nvidia shares rose as much as 4% in New York trading, extending gains of about 36% this year.
