Targeted Fuel Subsidy Saves Govt RM800 Million, Anwar Says

The government has saved RM800 million since the rollout of the targeted fuel programme on Sept 30, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the savings were achieved through tighter targeting of fuel subsidies, ensuring benefits go only to Malaysians and cutting leakages that previously benefitted over 3.5 million foreigners and fuel smuggling operations.

“Every ringgit saved is returned to the people,” he said, adding that the funds are being channelled into cash aid programmes such as Rahmah Cash Contribution and the Rahmah Basic Contribution, as well as upgrading healthcare facilities, roads and infrastructure.

Under the fuel subsidy programme, Malaysian MyKad holders aged 16 and above with a valid driving licence can purchase up to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 per month at RM1.99 per litre compared to the unsubsidised price of RM2.60.
