Bintulu Port Operations Extended To End-2026 As Sarawak Handover Finalises

Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad has secured a further 12-month extension to continue operating Bintulu Port through 2026, marking a critical final bridge in the port’s historic transition from federal to Sarawak state control.

In a filing BPHB announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bintulu Port Sdn. Bhd. (BPSB), has entered into the Fourth (4th) Interim Agreement with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Bintulu Port Authority (BPA).

The new agreement formalizes an extension of the interim period starting from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2026. This period may conclude earlier if the administrative transition to Sarawak management is completed ahead of schedule.

This move is the latest in a series of interim measures designed to ensure “business as usual” at Malaysia’s premier liquefied natural gas (LNG) gateway while the federal and state governments iron out the legalities of the handover.

The transition is governed by two landmark pieces of legislation passed by Parliament in 2024: Act 858: The Declaration of an Area in the Bintulu District to be a Federal Port (Repeal) Act 2024. Act 859: The Bintulu Port Authority (Dissolution) Act 2024.

These acts effectively repeal the port’s 43-year status as a federal facility, returning regulatory power to the Sarawak government in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
