Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon have held a phone conversation to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its broader implications on global security and economic stability.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said both leaders exchanged views on developments in West Asia, particularly the ongoing tensions involving Iran, and agreed on the need for continued diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
He reiterated Malaysia’s firm stance in condemning military actions against Iran, while rejecting unilateral measures that contravene international law. Malaysia, he said, continues to call for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians and a return to negotiations through diplomatic channels.
The discussion also touched on the economic spillover from the conflict, including rising fuel prices and pressure on domestic economies. Anwar noted New Zealand’s proactive steps in strengthening energy security and accelerating its transition towards renewable energy.
Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties under the existing strategic partnership framework, particularly in areas such as trade, investment and energy cooperation, while maintaining close coordination in addressing current global challenges.
