The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) has called on the government to review and reduce petrol allowances for the country’s 222 Members of Parliament, positioning the move as a necessary signal of leadership and national solidarity amid rising economic pressures.
Secretary General Ahmad Farhan Rosli said in a statement, policymakers must demonstrate shared responsibility as Malaysians face increasing cost burdens driven by global uncertainties, particularly tensions in West Asia that continue to affect energy markets.
The proposal comes as concerns mount over the impact of energy price volatility on households and businesses, with MBM stressing that visible leadership is critical in maintaining public trust during periods of economic strain.
Beyond this, the council also outlined broader policy recommendations, including refining the implementation of targeted diesel subsidies under the BUDI programme for private vehicle owners with a quota of 300 litres to reflect actual consumption patterns.
It further suggested expanding and reviewing for longer-term measures such as accelerating energy diversification and reducing reliance on external fuel sources.
He added that a coordinated, bipartisan approach potentially through a special parliamentary sitting, would be key to addressing the evolving energy landscape and ensuring policies remain responsive to the needs of the rakyat.
