Calls Grow For EV Expansion, Road Tax Relief Amid Rising Cost Pressures

Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) has called on the government to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure development and review road tax policies as part of a broader strategy to address rising cost pressures faced by Malaysians.

In a statement, the party said Malaysia’s EV charging network remains significantly below target for 2025, at a planned capacity of 33%. The party urged immediate action to expand infrastructure in order to reduce reliance on petrol and diesel.

MUDA also proposed that the government consider temporary import duty exemptions for fully imported Completely Built-Up (CBU) EVs to encourage adoption, alongside targeted road tax adjustments, particularly for vehicles above 2,000cc, including commercial vehicles affected by rising operating costs.

The party said such measures would provide both short-term relief and long-term structural shifts in reducing fuel dependency, especially amid ongoing global energy uncertainties.

MUDA also outlined additional proposals including refining targeted fuel subsidies, strengthening enforcement under anti-profiteering laws, and introducing a comprehensive food security strategy to mitigate external supply shocks.

It also backed calls for a bipartisan approach to address the issue, stressing that current challenges require coordinated national-level solutions beyond incremental policy adjustments.
