Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated Malaysia’s stance on maintaining strategic independence in addressing tensions in the South China Sea, stressing the need for regional solutions without external interference.
Speaking on recent developments, Anwar acknowledged ongoing issues involving China and the Philippines, but emphasised that ASEAN must take the lead in managing disputes within the region.
“We will press for a code of conduct with China, together with ASEAN partners, in order to secure and resolve this problem without interference of other forces,” he said.
Anwar said the matter will be raised at the upcoming ASEAN leaders’ meeting in the Philippines next month, where regional leaders are expected to continue discussions on maritime stability and cooperation.
He underscored that preserving sovereignty and independence remains critical, not only in the South China Sea but also across broader strategic waterways, including the Indian Ocean.
“That is very critical, that we must be able to resolve our own problems and differences. We must maintain our right and our fierce independence,” he said.
Anwar made the remarks during a Q&A session at the Kuala Lumpur–Ankara Dialogue 2026, moderated by ISIS Malaysia Executive Chairman, Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah.
