Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding domestic energy supply while continuing to play a constructive role in supporting global energy stability, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said.
The assurance follows a virtual discussion between Akmal and Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, where both sides exchanged views on regional and global energy security amid ongoing market volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
He added that discussions also centred on the current state of oil, gas and refined fuel supply chains, as well as the persistent pressures facing global energy markets due to geopolitical uncertainties.
Akmal added, Australia has given assurances that its domestic gas security adjustment measures will not affect Malaysia’s interests, providing a level of certainty for bilateral energy cooperation.
Both parties also agreed on the importance of clear, consistent and principle-based public communication under a “no surprises” approach, to ensure that policy signals are well understood and do not lead to misinterpretation.
“In an increasingly uncertain global environment, the focus must go beyond responding to crises. It is equally about preparedness, managing risks and safeguarding national interests,” Akmal said.
