KPJ’s DSH2 Becomes First In SEA To Introduce Supine HIFU For Fibroid Treatment

Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2), part of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s network, has become the first hospital in Southeast Asia to introduce Supine High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), marking a key step in non-invasive treatment options for uterine fibroids.

The hospital said Supine HIFU allows patients to undergo treatment in a face-up position instead of the conventional prone (face-down) position, which is typically required for extended periods during standard HIFU procedures. It said the approach is designed to improve patient comfort while maintaining treatment precision.

HIFU is a non-invasive technique that uses focused ultrasound energy to target fibroid tissue without incisions or removal of the uterus. It is generally suitable for selected patients with moderate-sized fibroids in appropriate locations, offering an alternative to surgery such as myomectomy or hysterectomy, which often require longer recovery periods.

At DSH2, the procedure is performed by Consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Dr Liew Yen Eit and Dr Haliza Kamarudin, who said the technique expands options for women seeking uterus-preserving treatment.

“The supine approach changes how the procedure is experienced by patients. It allows treatment to be carried out in a more comfortable position while maintaining the level of precision required for effective fibroid treatment,” said Dr Liew Yen Eit.

The supine HIFU approach enables treatment in a face-up position, offering greater comfort during longer procedures.

“This provides an additional option for women who are exploring alternatives to surgery, particularly those who wish to preserve their uterus. Careful assessment remains important to determine suitability for this treatment,” said Dr Haliza Kamarudin.

KPJ Healthcare President and Managing Director Chin Keat Chyuan said the introduction reflects efforts to strengthen women’s health services through targeted innovation.

“The introduction of Supine HIFU at DSH2 demonstrates our commitment to strengthening women’s health services through targeted innovation, thereby improving the quality of care delivered.

“This initiative, a significant milestone for the KPJ Health System, reinforces our dedication to advancing care through less invasive treatment options that preserve clinical outcomes and enhance the patient experience. This development exemplifies our commitment to applying technology in a practical and responsible manner, guided by our core purpose of ‘Care for Life’,” he stated.

The hospital added that the development aligns with its broader focus on advancing women’s healthcare and follows its recognition as Specialty Hospital of the Year (Women’s) – Malaysia at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026.
