Regulator Warn Platform Providers On Posting Sensitive Content Related To 3R

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is reminding the public not to produce or share content touching on race, religion and the royal institution (3R), especially if it is provocative, insulting or likely to stir tension.

In a statement, the regulator said it is taking a serious view of online misuse of platforms and network services that could affect social harmony. It also stressed the importance of checking information before sharing it.

“The public is advised to check the validity of information before sharing to avoid misunderstandings or hostility,” the statement said.

MCMC said it will continue working with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other agencies to monitor content, carry out investigations and take action where necessary.

Those found guilty can be charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, a prison term of up to two years, or both.

The commission also warned that action can be taken against platform providers who fail to cooperate, adding that they are expected to comply with local laws and help prevent misuse of their services.
