Malaysians Get To Watch FIFA World Cup 2026 After All

Malaysian football fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief after uncertainty over access to the world’s biggest sporting event was resolved, with the Communications Minister confirming that broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup will be carried by Unifi TV and Radio Televisyen Malaysia.

Details of the broadcast arrangement are still being finalised, but sources indicate that negotiations had been ongoing for months, largely due to the significantly higher fees imposed by FIFA for this edition. Some parties claimed that it was in the region of 100 million, while some noted was much higher.

Despite the late confirmation, the announcement has been widely welcomed by local fans, even as matches are expected to be aired during early morning hours in Malaysia due to time zone differences.

The 2026 tournament, set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada, is anticipated to be the largest in history following its expansion format. The final will be held in the United States, with Gianni Infantino previously noting that the event could become the biggest live broadcast spectacle ever, amid strong ticket demand and near-capacity stadiums.

Back home, the confirmation is also expected to provide a boost for local businesses. Eateries such as mamak outlets, along with hotels and restaurants, are likely to see increased patronage during match screenings. The tournament could serve as a timely uplift for consumers amid ongoing concerns over rising living costs and energy-related pressures.
