Malaysia, Indonesia Central Banks, Deepen Collaboration Amid Challenging Geopolitical Landscape

Bank Negara Malaysia and Bank Indonesia have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a broader framework for collaboration across key areas of central banking, including monetary policy, financial stability, macroprudential policy, payment systems, digitalisation, financial sector development, capacity-building initiatives and information sharing.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, BNM Governor Dato’ Sri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said the MoU reflects the longstanding partnership between the two institutions and their commitment to expanding collaboration into emerging areas of mutual interest.

“This MoU reaffirms the longstanding partnership between BNM and BI. It also underscores our shared commitment to deepen collaboration across established areas of central banking, while expanding cooperation into emerging areas of mutual interest,” he said.

Meanwhile, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo described the agreement as a significant milestone in advancing ties between the two central banks amid an increasingly challenging geopolitical environment.

“The MoU is more than a symbolic commitment. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of strengthening institutional ties and deepening bilateral cooperation between the two central banks, especially in the current challenging geopolitical landscape,” he said.

The central banks said the agreement would pave the way for a more robust and synergistic partnership, with both institutions looking forward to continued cooperation for the greater prosperity of Malaysia and Indonesia.
