A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the Bicol Region in the Philippines at 9.57pm on June 5, with authorities confirming no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor was centred about 15km south of Santo Domingo in Albay province, at a shallow depth of 9km.
The quake was strongly felt across parts of Albay and nearby provinces, with Intensity V recorded in Sto Domingo and Legazpi City, while Intensity IV shaking was reported in Tabaco, Ligao and Malilipot in Albay, as well as parts of Sorsogon.
Phivolcs also recorded higher instrumental readings, including Intensity VI in Tabaco City and Intensity V in Castilla, Sorsogon, indicating stronger ground movement detected by seismic instruments.
Lower intensities were measured across wider areas including Camarines Sur, Masbate and Camarines Norte, reflecting the quake’s broad regional impact.
Authorities warned that aftershocks and possible damage are expected following the event, as assessments continue across affected areas.
While the quake was felt across parts of the Philippines, Malaysian authorities confirmed there is no tsunami warning or threat to the country following the seismic event.
