The Penang LRT project is accelerating at rapid pace, with construction works for the Bandar Sri Pinang and Penang International Airport (LTAPP) stations are already visibly noticeable after the ground breaking ceremony in January this year.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that structural progress at both high-impact sites is advancing steadily. This will soon allow Penangites to view the actual architectural designs of the upcoming transit stations, which are currently awaiting imminent approval from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
Among the progress include for the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) Station where strategic structural framework installation is underway, with five viaduct pillars already fully cast and formed.
As for the Bandar Sri Pinang Station, works are further advanced. Substructure foundation layouts and primary station columns are fully completed, paving the way for the immediate construction of the main station building.
The Viaduct Progress sees six elevation pillars being successfully erected at the Bandar Sri Pinang site, with structural crosshead components scheduled to arrive at the location in the coming days.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted that both locations will serve as vital socio-economic anchors along the Mutiara Line network:
While celebrating the engineering progress, the Chief Minister urged the public to prepare for heightened traffic disruptions as construction shifts into top gear during the second half of 2026.
Active viaduct pillar works are currently scattered across 14 separate locations along the alignement, including Permatang Damar Laut, Gelugor, SPICE, Jelutong Timur, Macallum, and areas adjacent to Cecil Residensi.
Out of three highly critical bottlenecks identified by planners, the first TMP was successfully activated at the intersection of Jalan Tengah and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in early May. The remaining two critical TMPs are slated for deployment sequentially before the end of the year.
